Dewey's China Trip Photos: Shanghai: Shipyard

The Shanghai Shipyard

Cranes I saw all these giant cranes (many more than the six that fit in this photo's field of view) in the distance, constantly traveling this way and that. I wondered what they were doing and how such towering machines could move around so smoothly.

Crane When I got closer I saw that the cranes were constructing giant ships. But I still didn't know how they were able to move about because there was a wall around the shipyard and I couldn't see over it. Finally we found a man that let us climb up a rusty set of stairs to the roof so we could see over. It turns out the cranes roll around on railroad tracks. To get a sense of scale, see the man and the bicyle rider at the base of the crane. This is one of the smaller cranes.
